Vegetation Mapping of “pico Da Dara” Natural Reserve (s. Miguel Island, Azores Islands, Portugal) Using Ikonos Satellite Imagery

چکیده
S. Miguel Island's vascular plant flora (Archipelago of the Azores,Portugal) consists of approximately 1000 taxa and is largely dominated bynon-indigenous taxa. The rapid spread of some very aggressive invasivealien species, such as Pittosporum undulatum Vent. and Clethra arboreaAiton, is causing serious damages to this ecosystem. This paper assessedthe effectiveness of High Spatial Resolution IKONOS satellite imagery forvegetation mapping in Pico da Vara Natural Reserve using 4 non-parametric and parametric supervised classification techniques. Theoverall classification results showed that vegetation mapping using IKONOSimage can constitute a cost-effective approach for a continuousmonitoring, characterization and assessment of these insular ecosystems.

Assessing the status of tropical dry forest habitats using remote sensing technologies is one of the research priorities for Neotropical forests. We developed a simple method for mapping vegetation and habitats in a tropical dry forest reserve, Mona Island, Puerto Rico, by integrating the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from Landsat, topographic information, and high-resolution Ik...

The Azores archipelago is composed of nine volcanic islands located at the triple junction between the North American, Eurasian, and Nubian plates. Nowadays the volcanic activity in the archipelago is characterized by the presence of secondary manifestations of volcanism, such as hydrothermal fumaroles, thermal and cold CO2-rich springs as well as soil diffuse degassing areas, and low magnitude...

Given the importance of availability sufficient and accurate information on the structural characteristics of mangroves to develop conservation and restoration programs for these ecosystems, this study investigates and maps the structural characteristics of the coastal and island forms of the mangroves in the Hara Biosphere Reserve. To this end, through a field inventory (32 sample plots with t...
